E-Business Thesis Work

PLATFORM SEMINAR/ADVANCED SEMINAR (Thesis Guidance)

E-Biz students must register for either a PLATFORM Seminar (i.e. PLATFORM Seminar I , II and III), OR an Advanced Seminar (i.e., Advanced Seminars I, II, and III) to complete the requirements for the E-Biz degree. Students are required to choose either PLATFORM Seminar track or Advanced Seminar track by the registration deadline of the fall term. Both PLATFORM Seminars and Advanced Seminars serve as vehicles for writing the Master’s thesis but they are different in many respects.

PLATFORM Seminars are offered by each PLATFORM in IUJ-Research and Education PLATFORM. Students who take the PLATFORM Seminar Track are expected to choose one of the PLATFORMs. It is expected that students will keep their career objectives in mind when choosing a PLATFORM. After choosing a PLATFORM, a student decides a research project and a topic he/she will undertake for writinghis/her Master’s thesis in consultation with the PLATFORM Coordinator. Students may conduct research with other students in the PLATFROM under the supervision and guidance of its PLATFORM coordinator and participating faculty members.

GSIM encourages students to choose the PLATFORM Seminar track, as the PLATFORM Seminars were launched in the GSIM curriculum in order to support the writing of high quality Master’s theses in an academic environment that better replicates real life conditions.

If a student has his/her own research interests which none of the PLATFORMs covers, he/she is recommended to choose the Advanced Seminar track. A student who chooses the Advanced Seminar track is required to prepare a research proposal of two to three pages in length with clearly written motivation and key references. Then, he/she approaches supervisor candidate(s) with the research proposal and finds the most appropriate faculty member to supervise the research. Only the full-time faculty members of GSIM can be selected as supervisor, in principle. The Advanced Seminar is conducted on a tutorial basis.

A student is required to earn (3) credits from either PLATFORM Seminars or Advanced Seminars and submit an acceptable Master’s thesis (grade of B+ or better) for graduation.

For more details about these seminars and schedule for writing the Master’s thesis, please refer to http://www.iuj.ac.jp/im-info/.

Thesis work extending over the course of the entire 1-year program, including summer time, allows students to do a project that would use their learning at E-Biz and get close cooperation from the supervising professor. A thesis project can produce, for example, a new business plan, a new business idea, a completely new technology, a strategic plan involving technologies, or a comprehensive industry analysis, or competitive strategy. The facilities available to the students, including unlimited access to E-Lab, and the close association with professors in both the E-Biz and MBA programs, as well as unprecedented access to industry experts, provides a unique opportunity to produce a thesis paper that will help in securing a very successful career after graduation.
